Since 2014, Matt has published eleven books for kids that have been variously described as ‘funny’, ‘weird’, and ‘books’. Matt is currently co-writing a play inspired by The Mab, a retelling of the Mabinogi, for kids. The Mab was co-created by Matt and Eloise Williams in 2022. It has been voted Readers’ Choice at the Tir Na N-Og awards and was shortlisted for Wales Book of the Year.
Matt’s latest book series, Kevin the Vampire published by Nosy Crow, tells the story of a young vampire who lives with a carnival of monsters. The first book in the series, A Most Mysterious Monster, was nominated for the Lancashire Book Awards, 2025. Matt’s previous series include the award-winning Compton Valance and Dreary Inkling School, both published by Usborne.
Before dying his hair grey for fashion reasons, Matt presented on some of the UKs most popular TV shows like The Big Breakfast, Celebrity Love Island, and I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! He has also been on the radio a lot, hosting shows on Capital, Heart FM, Magic and Virgin Radio, and has also made a variety of documentaries for BBC Radio on subjects as wide-ranging as girl gangs, Quincy Jones, and conscientious objection.
Matt was recently voted “the greatest writer ever in the history of the world” by Stockport Grammar School, knocking Shakespeare into second place. He has gone horse-riding twice in his life, which both ended in disaster (DO NOT mention it if you see him), and Matt was once bitten by a dolphin. Despite the animosity shown him by the animal world he has been both a swineherd and a shepherd and writes books with his two sausage dogs sitting at his feet.
