Jocelyn Hurndall was born in Winchester, but spent her early childhood in Mauritius, where she was the only English-speaking pupil in a French-speaking school. In the early 1970s, having been inspired by her father's work as an engineer in Jordan before the Six Day War, she chose to serve as a kibbutz volunteer on the Israeli/Lebanese border. In 1974 she began a career in teaching, developing an interest in inclusion and disability and gaining a Master's degree. She later became Head of Learning Support in an inner-city school. She lives in North London with her family.

Defy The Stars: The Life and Tragic Death of Tom Hurndall, (Bloomsbury, 2007) is Jocelyn's elegiac account of her son Tom's journey to the Middle East as a photojournalism student, his death, and the effect of this tragedy on the Hurndall family. A story of sorrow and of hope, Jocelyn depicts the life and death of one remarkable young man, and gives voice to the many others he and his family represent: those who lose lives and loved ones every day in the Middle East.
