Cornelia Funke is an award-winning German children's author, born in Dorsten in 1958. After graduating from university, she worked for three years as a social worker in an educational project for children from difficult and deprived backgrounds. Following a post-graduate course in book illustration at the Hamburg State College of Design, she worked as a designer of board games and as an illustrator of children's books. Disappointed by the stories she was asked to illustrate, Cornelia was inspired to write her own stories for young readers - books that would appeal not only to bookish children but also to children who hadn't yet had a positive reading experience.
Cornelia's books have been translated from German into 35 different languages, and include INKHEART, INKSPELL, INKDEATH (publication Autumn 2008, Chicken House), THE THIEF LORD, DRAGONRIDER and IGRAINE THE BRAVE.
THE THIEF LORD movie came out in 2006 and the Hollywood production of INKHEART should premier in Berlin, London and America later this year.
As a reader, Cornelia has always loved good fantasy, such as J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, C. S. Lewis Chronicles of Narnia, J. M Barrie's Peter Pan and William Goldmans's The Princess Bride. She also loves Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife.
Cornelia lives in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, with her 18-year-old daughter Anna and 13-year-old son Ben and their wonderful and crazy dog Luna (aka Looney).
